Questions families ask
How many private schools are in the U.S.?
About 22,500 private schools answered the U.S. Department of Education's most recent survey, from preschools to high schools. Every one of them is listed here.
How much does private school cost?
Tuition varies widely, from a few thousand dollars a year at many parish and church schools to much more at independent and boarding schools. The federal survey doesn't collect tuition, so ask each school, and ask about financial aid and payment plans.
What is an ESA?
An education savings account (ESA) puts state money in an account that families can spend on approved education costs, such as private school tuition. Each state sets its own rules.
Can I use a voucher or ESA at any private school?
Only at schools that take part in your state's program. Ask the school, and check your state's official list.
